Sports reports on Wednesday that free agent center Joel Przybilla has decided to sign with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Jason Quick of The Oregonian reported on Tuesday night that the Portland Trail Blazers remain in the mix for free agent center Joel Przybilla. Previous reports (here and here) indicated that Przybilla was down to the Miami Heat or the Chicago Bulls.

Blazers Acting GM Chad Buchanan said recently that he has remained in contact with Przybilla, whom he considers a friend, throughout the season.

The Blazers traded Przybilla to the Charlotte Bobcats as part of a package for forward Gerald Wallace at the 2011 trade deadline. Przybilla, 32, spent 6+ seasons in Portland and has posted career averages of 4.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.

Portland currently has 15 players under contract but could free up a roster spot by waiving center Greg Oden, who underwent season-ending microfracture surgery on his left knee on Monday. If signed, Przybilla would be coming on a veteran’s minimum deal.

John Hollinger of ESPN.com writes that Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan could learn a lesson from San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who opted to rest key players during a Tuesday night game between the two teams.

It’s a lesson Blazers coach Nate McMillan might want to learn; one night after keeping LaMarcus Aldridge and Gerald Wallace on the court for 38 and 35 minutes in a hopeless situation against the Lakers, he had Wallace still out there with Portland up by 40 in the fourth quarter. It was their last game before the All-Star break, yes, but the cumulative wear and tear of this season is already taking a toll on Wallace in particular, who is averaging 35.8 minutes and had three straight single-figure outings before Tuesday night.

And it may also have taken a toll on Wes Matthews, who was on the court for no good reason in the fourth quarter when he sprained his left ankle. Fortunately for him, he’ll have eight days to recuperate before Portland plays again.

As noted last night, Matthews said on Tuesday night that he is fine and McMillan brushed off the idea that his starters shouldn’t play so deep into games for the 234,564,323th time of his career.

Quick: FA C Joel Przybilla To Decide Future On Wednesday?

As noted Tuesday night, Jason Quick of The Oregonian reported that the Portland Trail Blazers remain in the mix for free agent center Joel Przybilla. Quick reports Wednesday that a decision could be announced shortly.

Talked to Joel Przybilla this morning. He has made his decision but is waiting for his agent to finalize deal before revealing his choice. My sense is Przybilla has chosen Portland but I dont know that for sure. He did tell me he checked in with Wesley Matthews this week. Przybilla said he informed his agent of his decision on Monday night. He expects to announce his signing today.

Jason Quick of The Oregonian reports that Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan will use a new starting lineup on Tuesday night against the San Antonio Spurs.
