Nicolas Batum Dunks – BatooooomShakalaka!

Hey 6th Man Team! Back again, this time with the awesome video from the FIBA championships with Batum and the French Team taking on Rudy and his Spanish friends.

To borrow another line from wheels, “That was nasty!!” We’re really looking forward to seeing this again in a few months on during the Blazers games. Batum shows some upgrades skills here with the dribble-drive off of the interesting (read as offensive foul) pick set by his team-mate. Excellent clearance and distance on the dunk, and with those long arms he is going to be really hard to block. Also nice to see Batum’s shoulder is holding up well, a healthy Nicolas will be a big key to a big playoff plush for the Blazers. Can you believe that pre-seasons is only about a month away. Looking forward to it and expecting big things this year.

Let’s look at it this way, the Blazer make the playoffs and don’t get swept despite a depleted roster which the rest of the press seemed to forget about for the most part. Now, let’s get a healthy Nicolas for the whole season. Greg is coming and can continue to learn from Marcus Camby, if nothing else have 2 true centers for a whole season will be a big thing for this team. If Joel comes back and we still have his contract that’s just bonus, as Marcus Camby can slide over and take up the 4 spot making for a crazy twin-towers line-up. The Fan Team here is expecting a second round playoff run at least. If we can’t do that the realities of the NBA suggest there will be a shake-up of some sort, whether in the roster, coaching staff or both you will see should there be disappointment this season. But forget about that for now, just look at that video again and dream of the possibilities.

How do you solve a problem like Fernandez?

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Rudy Fernandez TradeWell, we’ve hinted at our thoughts on Rudy in previous blogs.  We decided to wait until a little of the smoke had cleared until we shared our thoughts on the matter.  But where there is smoke, there’s fire; in this case an inferno is raging.  Rudy wants out so badly that he is apparently more than willing to sit out the final 2 years of his contract rather than play basketball.  He even took a $25,000 fine for publicly talking about this and demanding a trade with Spanish papers and through his agent, which is a big no-no for players under NBA contracts.

Look, the Trailblazers 6th team loves Rudy and some of the stuff he has done for us.  We cheer just as hard with every dunk and 3 point attempt as everyone else.  When he’s struggling, we shout encouragement.  We complained louder than anyone when he was robbed in the dunk contest, and every time that Kenny Smith opened his unintelligent mouth.  But we didn’t buy the shirts, or the jerseys… we hate to say we told you so, but we kinda did.  It would be completely naive to not see this coming.

Rudy Fernandez is a god in Europe and particularly his home country of Spain.  There are offers in both Spanish and Greek league right now (behind closed doors of course) that would give Rudy anywhere from 7-10 million a season.  Some reports suggests that certain would be willing to pay him “under the table” while he sits out his contract.  Rudy comes to Portland and makes somewhere around 1.3 million a season and doesn’t get as much time on the court as he is used to with a jammed guard roster.  It just wasn’t ever going to work out in the long term.

There is that feeling of, wait and hope he makes it to camp and finds his love (and shooting touch) for Portland again.  With some roster changes, most notably Steve Blake departing, there figures to be more time for experienced players at the guard spots.  We think Rudy can do some spot point work and play off of Brandon at the 2 spot given more time to get acclimated to not be a spot-up 3 and fast-break dunk only guy.  There were some indications that McMillan might be changing his offense a bit, but not much has been said about that since.  Rudy could definitely benefit from some more run and gun type plays.

What happens next is anyone’s guess but we rate his chances of return at a million to one.

“So you’re saying there’s a chance!”

Wesley Matthews in. Rudy Fernandez out?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Portland Trailblazers Wesley MatthewsSo it seems to be all but a done deal that Rudy will be gone, though there has been no specific news all indicators remain.  When Utah did not match the Trailblazers offer sheet to Wesley Matthews and soon to be 2nd year shooting guard it only added to the knowledge that Fernandez wasn’t going to be around for the long term.  Sadly, most of at the Trailblazers 6th Man Team saw this coming as soon as Rudy was added to the team.  Rudy belongs in a dynamic, free-wheeling run-and gun kind of offense.  One where he isn’t just a catch and shoot 3-pointer guy.  He will continue to do that, but wants to run and dunk and fast-break, something that stopped immediately after Sergio left.  I think what Rudy fails to realize is that his own injury also limited quite a bit of that.  The problem may be with coach McMillan’s style more than anything though.

So what does Wesley Matthews bring?  He brings defense and long-range shooting along with youth an inexperience. If we can keep Batum, there will be times in the game where Brandon is at point and we have a 1-2 defensive punch at 2-guard and small forward.  Along with some increased spot-up shooting from Nicolas and the range of Matthews, this could be a really good thing when Brandon draws in defenders going down the lane.  Still, Rudy has shown he can light it up from long-range and with Steve Blake signing long-term with Los Angeles, where are Portland’s outside shooters at?  Matthews may be able to fill this role.

Hold on to your #5 jerseys Rudy fans, things are probably going to get really bumpy for you before the season starts.  Something has got give in the rotation, and if Portland should somehow pull off the miracle of landing Chris Paul, which is not likely (read the Chris Paul Article), there will be an even bigger jam at the guard positions in Portland.  Regardless of what happens, moves will need to be made one way or another.  There are too many guards, and currently 3 centers.  We need a true young point guard, or we need to bolster our SF and PF positions.

Chris Paul to Portland?

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Chris Paul and Brandon RoyWhat’s up Trailblazers and 6th Man Team fans?  We were all set to post our thoughts on the Chris Paul fever rampant in the community today, but the “news” took a lot of our thunder.  Word is coming out from some of the usual sporting news suspects that Chris Paul’s Monday morning meeting with NO management went well and that he “looks forward to playing in New Orleans” for some time to come.  The Trailblazers 6th Man Team was going working on a write-up that was more or less going to tell you guys not to get your hopes up.  Chris Paul to Portland would be an amazing thing.  The 6th Man Team believes that is instant Western Conference finals and puts us in a good position to achieve what everyone has been dreaming of around P-town for quite sometimes.

The problem being that the rumors of CP3 to here or anywhere were just that, rumors.  No one confirmed these, there was no source.  It got ratings and got pub, but most importantly around here is that it created a fervor.  We all know how passionate we Blazers fans are, it doesn’t take much to get us going crazy.  Sometimes our fan-base gets a little overzealous.  Too many people were thinking that Chris Paul to the Portland Trailblazers was a done deal.  But don’t loose all hope…

If Paul is going to be traded, and we are one of the “4 potentials” our assets far outweigh what anyone else is willing to offer.  More on that in a minute.  The fact is that this could be a smoke-screen or a clever-ploy on the parts of Paul or New Orleans management.  By stating that they “won”t trade” Paul it automatically drives the stock up for the trade.  Teams will be willing to give more,  The other thing it does is to keep any negative press away from Paul or the Hornets themselves.  This way any dealings can be done quietly behind closed doors.  If these dealings are still happening the the question becomes what players are the Trailblazers willing to give up.  You may not like the answer to the “who is on the table” question, Blazers fans.

The word, if such a thing really exists, is that Batum is basically required for the deal, and that Greg Oden is a likely add-on as well.  I would hate to lose Greg and his potential, but that potential would be slightly offset by probably having to take on the poor contract, yet solid play of Emeka Okafor.  That is more palatable than losing Batum, who is already a solid defender and shows signs of being an excellent offensive option.  The Trailblazers 6th Man Team sees the Scottie Pippen comparison there and really digs it.

Only time will tell how things shake out.  Keep tuned in to the 6th Man for all the latest news.  We hope to have an article up about Wesley Matthews pretty quickly here.  As always we are open to your comments, questions and suggestions.  Thanks for stopping by.

Trailblazers’ Buck Williams named Assistant Coach

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Trailblazers Buck WilliamsBuck Williams Trailblazers’ Great

The good and interesting news just keeps coming in regarding the Portland Trailblazers in the last week or so.  The Trailblazers 6th Man team is all over the news and the latest is a real treat for long-time Blazers fans.  One of the teams’ greatest players, Buck Williams, has returned to the team as an assistant coach.  Williams is the final “new” addition to the teams coaching staff along with NBA-veteran coaches Bernie Bickerstaff and Bob Ociepka.  Most Blazer fans need no reminder of who Buck Williams is and what he did for the franchise, but for younger fans who don’t know team history, the Trailblazers 6th Man team will provide you with a little background.

Buck Williams came over in a trade for New Jersey.  He was a already a veteran Power Forward and provided and additional toughness and defensive-minded basketball acumen that took the team to the NBA Finals in both 1990 and 1992.  His career field-goal percentage of 55% still stands as the highest in franchise history.  Buck was also the president of the Players Association from 1994-1997.  He knows the ins and outs of the game and will forever be known in Portland as part of the classic line-up featuring himself, Clyde Drexler, Terry Porter, Jerome Kersey and Kevin Duckworth.

Blazers Big Men Get Down and Dirty

It will most likely be natural for Buck to gravitate towards the big men, but coach McMillian thinks he has plenty to offer all of the players.  The 6th Man team would really like to see him hunker down with LaMarcus Aldridge.  It would be great to see Aldridge with even half of the toughness that Buck provided each and every game.  One Mr. Greg Oden will be sure to be able to benefit from Mr. Williams years of experience as well.  All-in-all this is a great hire for the Trailblazers, the get a knowledgeable and experienced Big man looking to teach the youngsters and the get the benefit of great PR by hiring someone who is so connected to the teams history.  This movie is Trailblazers 6th Man team approved!!

Rich Cho – Trailblazers New General Manager

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

The Trailblazers 6th Man Team has some news to talk about.  Following on the heels of a very successful Trailblazers 2010 Summer League the Portland Trailblazers announced their hiring of a new general manager.  44-year-old Rich Cho, the assistant general manager for the Oklahoma City Thunder was the man selected.  Cho interviewed with Larry Miller last week in Vegas.  Apparently that meeting went so well that the Trailblazers management abandoned any notions or pursuits of hiring Randy Pfund (former Miami Heat GM) or Danny Ferry (Former Cleveland Cavaliers GM).  The next day Cho was flown to a meeting with Trailblazers owner Paul Allen.  The meeting took place on one of Allen’s yacht somewhere near Helsinki.

Trailblazers GM - Rich ChoCho did an introductory press conference with president Larry Miller as well as several television and radio interviews at local media outlets.  The Blazers 6th Man Team wants everyone to know that it is clear this guy is no KP.  In fact, to us, it is obvious that he is the opposite of Kevin Pritchard when it comes to personality.  This guy will not be charming the media and giving great interviews.  He will mostly likely be staying completely behind the scenes.  Cho has a degree and background in mathematics, but he enjoyed sports and decided he wanted to get into the business.  He went back to school and obtained a secondary degree in law.  This lead to his first entrance in to NBA as an intern with what was then the Seattle Supersonics.

Cho has a connection to the northwest obviously.  His time with the Supersonics is just one.  He also grew up in Federal Way Washington.  This is just another connection from Seattle to Portland, who has a Seattle-based owner in Paul Allen, and is coached by Nate McMillan known during his time in the league as Mr. Sonic.  Also, don’t forget Brandon Roy from the University of Washington.  The Trailblazers 6th Man Team likes local more than anything, so this is a good thing.  Cho is a numbers guy, obviously from his background in mathematics, and this means we can expect to keep some of the high-level formulas and analysis that Pritchard used so well for us in the past.

One thing is definitely for sure, Cho has an uphill battle towards winning in the fans eyes.  Kevin Pritchard was extremely popular and fans are still angry.  The Trailblazers 6th Man Team feels the same way.  We cannot understand replacing a really good GM with an assistant from another organization.  Yes the Oklahoma City front office has been doing well and making some smart moves.  But, was this really an upgrade?  Moreover will fans be able to get over the timing with which Pritchard was fired?  We should have had a general manager in place before the draft, or at the very least before free agency started.  Now the Blazers will be trying to play catch-up to all the other teams that have already improved.  The dreams of Chris Paul coming to town have certainly faded to near transparency and will be completely gone should Pritchard be hired as New Orleans GM as is rumored.  Portland needs to make some moves; as they said themselves they are a couple piece away from being near the top.

Only time is going to tell how the tenure of Richard Cho will go.  He will most likely be given more room to operate than KP as long as he stays behind the scenes, which his personality suggests he will.  Keep tuned in to the Trailblazers 6th Man Team for the latest news as we begin gearing up for the 2010-2011 Portland Trailblazers seasons.  Can you believe we are already so close to the open of the season in early October?

Trailblazers 2010 Summer League

Monday, July 19th, 2010

So, Trailblazers fans finally some good news to report on the Portland Trailblazers front.  We kinda ignored the draft stuff around here, because it meant we would have to talk about the KP firing and it still hurts too bad for us to blog about.  So, we’re gonna move straight on to discussing how well the Trailblazers 2010 Summer League went.  For the first time in quite a long time, the Trailblazers had a winning record during the summer league.  In fact, they almost went a perfect 5-0 during their time in Vegas, and if it weren’t for a missed wide-open mid-range jumper they would have indeed accomplished that perfect achievement.  All-in-all it was a great showing for the team of reserves, rookies and hopefuls.

Although he didn’t shoot very well we got a chance to look at Luke Babbitt and I for one was impressed.  I ‘m not saying he’s going to get a ton of minutes or anything, but his game looks like it is ready to step for spot minutes here and there.  He can shoot from range and does a surprisingly good job of passing and putting the ball on the floor.  Perhaps the most interesting thing out of summer league was the battle between rookie Armon Johnson and 2nd-year man Patti Mills out of Australia.  Mills showcased his speed, range and dishing ability a ton in the first few games, almost achieving a triple-double in the second game of the 2010 Summer League.  He mysteriously sat the next and played post minutes in the final 2.  This paved the way for Armon Johnson to take on #1 pick John Wall in game three and he held his own, earning big-time headlines.  I suspect the Blazers are going to hold on to Armon in anticipation of losing Mills as he is unrestricted from what I understand.

The other big news is the hiring of OKC assistant GM Rich Cho as the Trailblazers new general manager.  We’ll have more of that story soon as information is just starting to come out.
